COVID-19 Testing Q&A

What is COVID-19 testing?

COVID-19 testing involves a nasal swab, throat swab, or saliva sample that allows your provider to test for the presence of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes COVID-19. RGV Urgent Care Clinic offers polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing and antigen tests (rapid tests), that provide results in just 15 minutes.

Antibody testing uses a blood test to determine if you have protective COVID-19 antibodies that reduce your chance of getting COVID-19 or coming down with severe symptoms.

What are the symptoms of COVID-19?

The common symptoms of COVID-19 include:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Coughing
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Headaches
  • Muscle or body aches
  • Fatigue
  • Loss of smell or taste
  • Sore throat
  • Congestion
  • Runny nose
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Chest pressure

These symptoms could develop 2-14 days after you’re exposed to the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

What are the risk factors for contracting COVID-19?

COVID-19 spreads from person to person through droplets in the air from coughing, talking, and sneezing, close contact, and touching the same surface as an infected person.

The best ways to reduce your chance of contracting COVID-19 are to wash your hands often using antibacterial soap, use hand sanitizer, avoid touching your face, and maintain distance from other people who have tested positive for COVID-19 or have symptoms.

What should I expect during COVID-19 testing?

Your RGV Urgent Care Clinic provider lets you know which type of COVID-19 testing is best for you. They review your medical history and symptoms, complete a physical exam if necessary, and swab the inside of your nose or throat. Or they may take a saliva sample from you.

You can expect the results within a day or two, or after just 15 minutes if you’ve had a rapid test.

What happens if I test positive for COVID-19?

If you test positive for COVID-19, it’s important to get plenty of rest and drink a lot of fluids. Maintain your distance from other people to reduce the chance of spreading COVID-19 to them.

If you experience uncomfortable symptoms, your RGV Urgent Care Clinic provider offers medications or other treatments that help you feel better. They refer you to hospital care if you have life-threatening symptoms.
